Amplitude vs Mixpanel: closer than either would like to admit.

Two strong product analytics tools, two sets of limits and add-ons, and fewer real differences than the sales pitches suggest. Here's where each one wins, from people who implement both.

The short answer

Both do funnels, retention, paths and session replay, even on their free plans. The real differences are in the limits, the pricing and the add-ons, so the right pick depends on your volumes and your team.

WHICH ONE, WHEN

When each one is the better choice.

Pick Mixpanel when…

  • Your team already knows it and the setup is sound. Switching costs more than it saves.
  • You want more session replays on a mid-tier plan: Mixpanel Growth includes 20,000 a month.
  • You want experiments and feature flags built in, with usage limits you can see up front.

Pick Amplitude when…

  • You want more room on the free plan: 2 million events a month, against Mixpanel's 1 million.
  • You need a long data history: unlimited on Amplitude's Growth and Enterprise plans.
  • You want one partner to set up your analytics and connect it to your engagement and attribution tools. That's us, and Amplitude is the analytics tool we partner with.
HOW WE HELP

How we help

Whichever you pick, the tool matters less than the tracking plan behind it.

01

An honest recommendation

We look at your volumes, your team and your other tools, and tell you which fits. Sometimes that means staying where you are.

02

Implementation

SDKs, identity and a tracking plan in either tool, done so the numbers can be trusted.

03

Switching

Sending events to both while you move, checking the numbers match, then rebuilding the reports people actually use.

04

Ongoing support

Someone to call when a release breaks a funnel, or a stakeholder asks a question nobody can answer.

IN THE INTEREST OF FAIRNESS

Who we partner with

Amplitude is a partner of ours. We implement and support Mixpanel too, without a partnership, and we'll tell you if staying on Mixpanel is the right call.

FAQS

The questions people ask us first.

Is Mixpanel or Amplitude cheaper?

It depends on your volumes. Mixpanel's free plan includes 1 million events a month and Amplitude's 2 million, and both have paid plans that start at $0 with the first events free. Beyond that, compare quotes on your real volumes, not list prices.

Can we move from one to the other?

Yes. Events can usually be sent to both while you switch, so you can check the numbers match before turning one off. Old reports and dashboards need rebuilding, so it pays to rebuild only the ones people use.

Do both have session replay?

Yes, including on the free plans: 10,000 sessions a month on Amplitude's Free and Plus plans, and 10,000 replays a month on Mixpanel's Free plan.

Which is better for B2B products?

Both sell account-level analysis as an add-on on their higher plans: Accounts on Amplitude Growth and Enterprise, and Group Analytics on Mixpanel Growth and Enterprise.
