Amplitude vs GA4: which one answers your question?

GA4 tells you where visitors came from. Amplitude tells you what they did next. Here's an honest look at when each one wins, when you need both, and what each costs to get started.

The short answer

Use GA4 to see where people come from and to feed Google Ads. Use Amplitude to see what they do once they're in your product. Plenty of teams run both, and that's often the right answer.

WHICH ONE, WHEN

When each one is the better choice.

Pick GA4 when…

  • Your main question is which campaigns and channels bring people in.
  • You run Google Ads and want conversions and audiences to flow straight back.
  • Budget is tight: standard GA4 costs nothing to run.
  • Your site is mostly content and marketing, not a product people log in to.

Pick Amplitude when…

  • Product decisions depend on funnels, retention and what people do after they sign up.
  • Product managers need answers without queueing for an analyst.
  • You need to analyse behaviour over longer periods, which Amplitude's paid plans allow.
  • You want session replays and feature flags in the same tool as your analytics.
HOW WE HELP

How we help

We set up the one you need, and if that's both, we make sure they agree with each other.

01

One tracking plan

One list of events and properties, named so people understand them, feeding both tools the same way.

02

Amplitude, done properly

SDKs, identity, and the first dashboards your product team will actually open.

03

GA4 clean-up

Fix the property you already have: key events, Google Ads links, filters and consent.

04

Connecting the rest

Send cohorts to your engagement platform and ad accounts, and attribution data into both.

IN THE INTEREST OF FAIRNESS

Who we partner with

Amplitude is a partner of ours. We also set up and fix GA4, and if GA4 is all you need, we'll tell you.

FAQS

The questions people ask us first.

Can we run Amplitude and GA4 together?

Yes, and many teams do. GA4 handles acquisition and Google Ads; Amplitude handles product behaviour. The trick is one tracking plan, so both tools count the same things the same way.

Will Amplitude replace GA4?

Not usually, and we wouldn't push it. GA4 does acquisition reporting and Google Ads well, for free. Amplitude adds the product view GA4 isn't built for.

Is Amplitude free?

There's a free plan with 2 million events a month. Paid plans are priced on events or monthly tracked users, depending on the plan. Amplitude's pricing page has the current details, and we can help you estimate your volume.

Is GA4 really free?

Standard GA4 is. GA4 360, the enterprise version, is priced through Google's sales team. Exporting raw data to BigQuery is free to switch on, but BigQuery's own storage and query costs apply once you go past its free sandbox.

Why do some GA4 reports hide data?

GA4 applies data thresholds that withhold some data in reports and explorations, for example ones that include demographics, and you can't adjust them. If that's getting in the way of decisions, it's worth a conversation.
